Translating Performance // Republish

This article was originally written in 2013 for the now-defunct platform "Preformance", developed with Noon Enterprises, the Goethe Institute and EPS51 . I have removed links where no longer available.  Bilingual Flyer for an event On the contextual promotion and staging of performances in another culture. The context of a production, and the reception of it, change depending on where it is performed. While this is true of any form of art, there are some considerations to be made when promoting and staging your performative production to an audience with a passing knowledge of the culture it sprang from. In the following, you will find a general outline to making a performance accessible to an international audience and to theatres outside the Arabic- speaking world. The more specific the play is to a certain location, time and society, the more it becomes a code that needs to be deciphered by the recipient, sometimes even explained to them. A play ...

I'm never gonna shower again…

Ah, the joys of the clean bathroom. It shines and sparkles and it smells nice. It makes the morning that much brighter and the water feel warmer and all manner of things cuddly, hygienic and fragrant.  Here's what really happens, courtesy of the league of People against Dirty.  It seems they want nutrition information printed on cleaning products. Via wordsandpictures .

This explains it all. 3.5% of it anyway.

I am, of course, talking about Google Wave. Epipheo Studios explain, in simple terms and a lovely bit of animation, what it does. Also worth watching: Their explanation of how the Internet has Changed Advertising. Or their ad for efficient Inkjet Printers. It must be thursday, so happy that!

Treatments of Madness. (Q3Pt.II)

This has also been a semester filled with some fun and some games… imagine that you were approached by Mercedes. They want to launch their new Hybrid luxury limousine in style. You are a young and aspiring copywriter for a tiny Ad agency somewhere in the boonies. What do you do? You call one of your friends over, and get to work on them. In our case, the result looks like this here (in German): Our second imaginary client was one I'd like to work for at some point (as, probably, would most designers)… my hint: . Que the famous baby music, Justin Long and John Hodgeman are standing in front of the white background and que my three favourite Mac vs. PC spots from our writers bullpen.

All hail the canned Lions!

Here we are again, another year hath passed, and once gain, The Cannes Festival is upon us. The lions are being distributed to the lucky and the happy and the most creative. Cyber Lions Dept. : If you needed confirmation, yes, the Best Job in the world Was an ad campaign to promote Australia, the Joker and Harvey Dent do exist and Fiat did do their bit to reduce emissions by interacting with their customers. Radio is still Alive Dept. : Virgin scores in South Africa with a mad rush of shaved tortoises and plane madness. Brilliant surreal stuff! And the latest installment in Bud Lights' tribute to the underappreciated Men of Genius. Fun From Japan Dept: Two words: Kitto Katsu! The Best Job in the World seems to be the overall winner to me, winning Cyber, PR and Direct Grand Prix'. The Link is in the title. And We're still doing the Mercedes Commercial Student Project.

True Blood…Mini Coopers?

Is this a surprising partnership? After product placement has hit every major motion picture, it was only a question of time before it hit actual advertising. Cross-advertising for the Mini Cooper and HBOs True Blood (140609) has hit the streets of the US. True Blood is about Vampires, which are deemed to be cool (or at least, dead). The Mini Cooper is one of the coolest cars ever. You do the math. Another line will be "Type GO". This promotion is not limited to Mini. Other partners would include Harley-Davidson, Gillette, Monster.com, and Geico, each promoting their own brand in the context of Vampires. Hmm… Gillette. Don't eat too many sweets… says Adobe?

This commercial for Adobes Production Premium suite takes on the guise of a short film. It uses pretty much any kind of special effect you can think of, including stop motion animation, overlaying letters, eating cake and subtitles, human beings opening up… basically showcasing all the fun that can be had using the products… now if only they could also be made slightly more affordable…

Beyoncé is cuté…when playing Nintendo.

For some reason, I can't stop watching this ad for the Nintendo DS-I. It features reaction shots of Beyoncé Knowles playing Rhythm Heaven. I've never been that big a fan of the lady since she left Destinys Child (waaayway back when…), but it's almost impossible to avoid occasionally bumping into her when following the media. But this has to be the best use I've seen her put to in advertising to date, more enjoyable than the work she did for L'Oreal or the like… This feels like the best in advertising for me: An honest depiction of the fun that can be had with a product without diluting it with extra effects. It is a simple film of seemingly natural reactions she has while playing what seems to be a very enjoyable game. And for a change , it made me want to go out and buy one of her albums… The title will take you to the official Rhythm Heaven website. Found on Adrants.

Taking double-enténdre to print

For the Contemporary Art Festival of Terrassa, Barcelona agency Evil Love has produced some very nice posters playing with visual interference. The trick is to overlay a laver of red face with a blue one, resulting in a disturbing trompe- l'oeil effect. This set me wondering whether donning a set of 3D glasses would enable you to see the layers seperately… Very nice execution. PS: As the press kit shows, yes 3D glasses do work and are included. Whobee! For those wondering, Terrassa is about 10 km northwest of Barcelona. SOURCE: ADSOFTHEWORLD

Deutschmark shags Dollar, begets quadruplets

In a slightly disturbing spot for the Bontrust Bank, Germany's Optix, brings us the results of money love. Even though I enjoyed the origami animation and the concept of the entire universe being made of money (dirty old capitalist that I am), I do find the spots resolution somewhat unnerving. Wouldn't money creating more money randomly cause massive inflation? Plus, the mark died out ten years ago, dinnit? A good example of when a good idea takes things a bit too far for it be good for the brand. The message to me: Money's a whore. She'll sleep with anyone to procreate. At least no money was harmed in the making of this film. The title takes you to Optix website! Hooray!

Self-Destruction

From Big Ant International, this very smart poster campaign for the Global Coalition for Peace . They won a Gold Pencil for this one at the One Show and were shortlisted for various other prizes… I'll link this to scaryideas , as their depiction of the posters is the most coherent. A nice way to show that selling weapons to anyone may come back to haunt you at some point. The title will take you to Big Ants' website.

Una corta historia del ron.

Again, liquor provides us with a very nice spot. I've covered more vodka than is good for me in the past, but in this case, Bacardi surprised me with a good, stylish, not- too- party oriented spot, featuring a guy, exploring the time- travel inducing effects of a good binge. It's statistics day…

Here's another take on statistics, skewed and turned and centrifugated for advertising purposes. For Sprint, a US telephone network, by Goodby, Silverstein & Partners and the design shop superfad. I wonder where they got their data?

Quarterly Update Pt.1: Radioaktiv

In this attempt to update everyone in the happenings over the last three months, or so, I give you these process and developpment pictures. First up, a university project, dreamt up in collaboration with Julie- Sophie Himpe. The brief was to invent a new and innovative radio station. Deciding to focus on the increasing role of social media in the way public information is produced, we created a radio station based on a web and phone community, with contributors reporting on a semi-professional basis. We called it Radioaktiv, a play on radio and active in German. The advertising campaigns reflect this: You can make radio happen anywhere. And it will be yours. The Giveaways: The tape, which is the theme running through any media used to advertise Radioaktiv, is of course given to contibutors who can then use it to decorate their surroundings. The video we made to accompany this can be found here: Radioaktiv Tower from Caram Kapp on Vimeo . It was also a nice opportunity to engage in ...

Microsoft advertises…Shoes?

I tried blogging this earlier, but somehow the words to describe this ad from Microsoft by Crispin Porter+Bogusky just wouldn't come. So I'll just post it here, and not comment. In fact I'll just link you to Adgabber, and let them do the commenting. Find more videos like this on AdGabber

Mr Fancypants

One of the things Levis is known for, apart from their jeans, is the quality of their ads. How does a brand that has been known for some shockingly good TV advertising in the past adapt to the new reality of people actually being able to skip the ads on the telly and doing useful things with the time that frees up? They figure the following: They're all watching youTube anyway, and everyone is just itching for the next big funny viddy to hit the web. So they sent out some guys with helium and a pair of jeans and what happened was this: My only niggle with its realism is: wouldn't a guy with helium-filled pants float upside down, as his upper body has more mass than his helium filled pants? Apart from that beautifully produced and a lovely idea, even if the facial expressions to sometimes betray the fact that it is an ad. But even if it isn't, we think it is and so we mention the name levis in conjunction with some really cool stuff. Which is, at the end of the day, good pro...
