#MeMus: You look somewhat bookish

Amongst many other things, the MeMu's are an evolving set of volumes. This is a quick development shot from v2's dummy.

The Little Book of Fears — The Movie!

I've been talking about this one for months, haven't I? One of the difficulties with this project is explaining the fun it is live. Usually, I'll say something like:"You know, it's like one of those umumum kids' books that have a head and a middle and feet and then umumum you flip through it and make up figures. It's about fear. Oh, and it has explanations in the back." That's where friends (Thanks Jovita!) and cameras come in. In stead of going through the verbal  motions again and again, they made it possible to record the experience that is the Little Book of Fears, thus providing the viewer with a nonverbal and direct explanation that works better than most words I have hitherto come up with to explain this. It is also my first foray into stop-motion shot in natural light, which was a joy to make, from the shoot to the selection of the individual frames that would make up the film to the final hectic edit. I wanted it to be slightly jar...

Coming soon: Be afraid. Be scared…

Something small and frightening this way comes…

Type research Diary: Printings!

Research into the what of what of being happy tells us that we experience happiness in jolts and starts, a curve that starts very high and dives to rockbottom within a day or so. So out of solidarity with that curve, this:  We have reached the stage where things that have been populating the web for the past half a year or so are beginning to penetrate into reality. The interface that allows this is based on the old idea that thoughts can be mass- produced on paper via a duplication tool, which used to be called a printing press after spending years of its life as a copy made by hand. It turns pixels on your screen into points of pigment on a page!  Absolutely brilliant.  This is what happens:  This is my first printing test, in which i discover flaws in type, reasoning and pictures. A lot remains to be done before I am fully satisfied, but it is an ongoing project. Now, some thanks are in order to those who have made the book what it is and possible. You will...

Type Research Diary: Conclusion

This project has been with me and you, dear reader, for a while now, and I am happy to say that this, too has reached a stage of near-completeness. Together with the magazine from the last post, the culturefile is the first part of a three-part cycle I am working on about the Arab spring. This part is the past, the second part, presented before this one, the present and the third part, due begin in late July, will represent the future. So, in todays ongoing mission of spreading happiness through spreads, this: Many thanks to all of those who have involved themselves in this project through interest, coercion or necessity! A Note: This still lacks a name. Suggestions are welcome! The same applies to this project as did to the last:  To anyone happening on this blog and finding their material within: Up to now, this project is entirely non-commercial. Should my use of your output offend you, please get in touch with me.

The Little Book of Fears: Process

One of the happiest times for anyone is when months of research and various prototypes lead to a tangible result. Between all the revolting and exhibitions, one of my main projects has been this volume in  four parts (a flipbook with head, middle and feet plus an appendix).  To arrive at the final result, a ringbound 112x125 booklet with a gated cover, I went through three black and white and two coloured prototypes, two of which you will find below. I was trying to avoid a ring-binding, however experimentation showed me that it would be a difficult book to open with a sown back. My second goal was to have the book and the cover bound together, which was possibly even easier with the ringbound version than with the sown. Though the sown version is more elegant and I may attempt to make an 6th version with different materials and better print, paper & binding.  Soo… Documentation pictures! V3: Still black and white, but the binding is almost final.  V4: A...
